In further talks with de Nyscchen, he described what the new North American plant would need to be capable of. Nyscchen believes that the plant will need to have at least one vehicle line which can produce at least 100,000 units to make economic sense. Last year, Audi only sold a total of 117,500 vehicles in the United States last year. Furthermore, it will be anticipated that Audi will export a lot of these vehicles to other countries.

The new design uses a thin ring of metal placed in the brake rotor to soak up vibrations and essentially mute the squealing noise drivers are accustomed too. The people at GM are calling this breakthrough design a ‘Coulomb friction-damped disc brake,’ which is named with respect to Charles-Augustin de Coulomb, an 18^th Century Physicist.

This new state-of-the-art ‘silent’ brake is still being tested vigorously by GM engineers and is expected to come stock in some GM vehicles in the next two to three years. The beauty of the Coulomb damped brake is that it allows the brake to simply do its job, said Jim Webster, GM engineering technical expert for rotors.

Jim Webster, General Motor’s Engineering Technical Expert for Rotors, stated that, “When we design brakes, our goal is to make them an extension of the driver. When the brake pedal is applied, the customer shouldn’t have to worry about unwanted noises. The car should just stop or slow down within the distance that’s expected. The Coulomb damped brake allows the brake to perform quietly as a seamless part of the automobile.”

Automotive engineers have been dealing with brake squeal for 100 years. By nature, brakes are a major source of friction, which makes them a potentially significant source of noise. The unwanted noise in a brake is usually created when the brake pads are pressed against the flat face of the rotor to slow or stop the vehicle. The friction of the two surfaces leads to vibrations and noise.

The strength of the Coulomb damped brake is the way it does its’ business, by going after the rotor. The rotor, is hard to muffle noise due to the large unconstrained areas, which create vibration. That’s where GM’s genius of inserted a metal ring inside the rotor comes in, allow for minimal if any noise. A Group Manager for GM, Jim Schroth, compared the new brake accordingly, “The Coulomb damped brake essentially creates a bell that doesn’t want to ring. By absorbing the vibrations in the rotor with the special insert, we’re silencing the bell.”
